Sunday Paddle - Violettes Lock / GW Canal Loop - 2.8'
The Sunday paddlers will return to the George Washington canal for a loop trip on July 19. For any newcomers, this is a Class I-II trip. Paddlers should be able to control their craft in moving water. We will meet at the Violette's Lock parking lot (13948 Violettes Lock Rd, Poolesville MD), cross the Potomac to the George Washington canal on the Virginia side, run the canal, come back across the Potomac and return to Violettes Lock via the flatwater C&O canal, thus avoiding the need for a shuttle. Total trip length is about three miles. PFDs are required for all; helmets are highly recommended, especially for kayakers. If you need safety equipment, please advise. The predicted water level is 2.8’on the Little Falls gauge. This is a bit low and will require boat control is places. The weather is predicted to be in the upper 90s by noon. So bring plenty of water and a snack. Gatorade is also recommended.
We want to be COVID-19 safe both on the river and off so please review the CCA COVID-19 safety tips if you haven't already done so (they're found on Trip Guidelines on this tab.)
Weekend parking has been difficult at Violettes Lock this summer so we will meet at 9:00. Please be prompt. If there are ten or more paddlers we will divide into groups. In order to facilitate trip planning please be sure to advise me at hmslydia@msn.com or 703-273-9436 if you are planning to join. I will have my cell phone with me Sunday morning Sunday morning AFTER 8:00 a.m. If you are running late. Don't just drop in.
New Folks to our trips, please read CCA's Covid Tips (on this Trips Tab under Trip Guidelines.) Also American Whitewater's Safety Code in the CCA Handbook (not the annual Roster) pp. 18-25 - or on their website at https://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/Wiki/safety:start?
