Skills Practice at the Potomac Chutes - 3.65 ft
Author Last Post
Sunday, 9 June 2019 - Gus, Alf, & John Snitzer took Gordy, Pam, and Soren Anderson up from Anglers to practice ferrying, eddy turns, peel-outs, high & low braces, and attaining.  Amazing in this day and age, all three of our noobs had never been up to the Chutes, so a wonderful introduction to the glories of our lower river.   3.65 is a trifle on the beefy side, so noone poked his nose into the MD rapid, but practised sneaking up the sides.  Off to the Center Rapid - sashayed across, using the less-flowing surfaces.  JS demonstrated how to make the elevator move to attain to the higher level of Center, then we spent most of our time in the Virginia Chute - none of us engaging, as far as I saw, with the actual maw of the beast - although a bunch of more experienced kayakers were doing so - and flipping with painful regularity.
We moved 100 yards downstream to the low in-stream rocks where, for the most part, we stayed upright - got to practice a couple of rescues - and ferrying from behind these and ehgaging the current for peel-outs.  Back to Anglers by noon, just as the predicted rains were showing up - perfect timing.
Anglers parking at 9:00 is tight - better try at 8:00 next time.  A perfect outing.
