Mallows Bay Ship Graveyard
November 10 (Change from November 9 because of weather) (Veterans Day Weekend): Mallows Bay Ship Grave Yard in the National Marine Sanctuary Trip #2 During a leisurely paddle, we will explore the WWI boats and other miscellaneous water craft that were scuttled in the bay. This section of the Potomac is on the eastern side in Charles County. The meeting place is the Mallows Bay Marine Sanctuary on 1440 Wilson Landing Road in Nanjemoy, MD 20662. The distance is 68 miles from Aspen Hill, MD (outer reaches of Silver Spring). Low tide will occur mid-morning lasting for a few hours day and is the best time. Bring a boat with leg-room along with some very warm clothes, snacks, and cameras. There may be some underwater structures that are not visible when the sky is overcast or the water is turbid—so avoid fiberglass boats. IKs should not have a problem. There are no changing rooms, but there are clean pit toilets. For more information, see the links below. In addition to paddling, there are a variety of short hiking trails. There is the possibility for a stop on the way back in Accokeek for oysters and/or terrific BBQ. Contact Beth for more information (240-506-0417).
