North Branch Potomac - Westernport to Black Oak Take-Out
(posted 7 Sept) - John Snitzer & Alf Cooley invite you to try out this seldom-paddled section - a Class II with a Cl. III hole halfway down the 10-mile length. The 1,000 cfs release from Jennings Randolph Dam will be under our boats, so we should move rapidly. What's new here is that with the Westvaco Paper Co plant at Luke now shuttered, the foul water and stench are no longer. This section is 22 feet per mile, as opposed to Bloomie's 33 fpm. Please let Alf or John (Navajuela@comcast.net) you're coming - and to discuss the meeting place - important, too for setting our shuttle. Take-Out is Black Oak Landing - aka Gary Yoder Boat Landing, just upstream of an abandoned truss bridge over the Potomac. It is 3 miles NE of Keyser W.Va - up over a low mountain. (17 mi down US 220 from Cumberland) Take a right across the RR right at the bottom of the mtn - the tiny sign says "Black Oak" and you take the right fork right after crossing the RR tracks. Parking for ca 20 cars. From there we'll shuttle up to Westernport. Alf's Cell is 703-963-5998. John's Cell is 301-404-0009 but TEXT him. Not sure about cell service in the area.
When:
Sunday, September 15, 2019, 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM
Where:
