Trip Reports

Thursday Paddlers - Lower Yough - Aug. 1
Larry Lempert

The Thursday Aug. 1 trip found 9 paddlers on the Lower Yough at a level of about 2.3 feet. Just after the trip was announced the morning before, with an expectation of a level of about 1.8 feet, the gauge at Ohiopyle jumped to almost 4 feet in the space of 15 minutes. Apparently the damkeepers decided to let loose after some significant rain the day before. So we were happy it came back down again to within the usual summer range, albeit still a tad on the higher-than-usual side. Kayakers: Mike Aronoff, Mark Brenneman, Barb Brown, David "Cotton" Cottingham, Glen Johnston, Maryilyn Jones, Cindy Rogers (her first time down the Lower Yough, and she did well!), and John Snitzer. Lone canoeist: Larry Lempert, the trip coordinator. One swim, at Cucumber, with a swift recovery.
