Highlights of April 24 Board Meeting

The CCA Board met virtually April 24. The full minutes have been posted on the CCA website (Members Only > Documents > Meeting Minutes). Here are some highlights, from minutes taken by Secretary Jen Sass:

Present: David (Cotton) Cottingham (Chair), Jen Sass (Secretary), Susan Sherrod, Barb Brown, Ryan Morrow, Alan Gale, Ginny DeSeau, Lynn Miller, Alf Cooley, Laura Kurup, Hildy Ferraiolo, Gary Quam, Risa Shimoda, Marilyn Jones, Kathleen Sengstock, Peter Ryan, Dean Hawes, Alan Gale, Rolo Arrieta, Gary Steinberg

Treasurer's Report – Marilyn

As of April 21, CCA's year-to-date income is $10,872.30. Our expenses were $11,168.71. Our net operating income is (296.41). Two large upcoming expenses are the Roster (estimated at $2,400) and Race shirts ($2,200). So, that is an additional almost $5K in upcoming expenses. We have not seen much income from race registration yet; last year, most of the race registration income hit the books in May.

Membership – Ginny

We are maintaining our membership, though as usual we lose some and gain some, and sometimes come back after long lapses. We have had about 20-plus members that recently renewed but their payment didn’t process within the ClubExpress system. Susan and Ginny are looking into it. Susan will turn on the auto-notice that lets people know when their payment fails to go through.

Safety Report – Rolo

We are in a reset mode right now. The ad hoc Safety Committee is going to regroup and think through plans for mid-May through Fall. Rolo has a spreadsheet with ideas, including a possible regular mid-week safety trip.

Cotton gave a big shoutout to Rolo for the past few months of safety course offerings, including wilderness first aid with Charlie Duffy. Cotton and Ryan played the victims' role and really enjoyed the course. Laura chimed in with all the good feedback she heard on the courses. Bravo Rolo!

Instruction Committee – Gary S.

A number of things are in the works and under discussion, but not far enough along to provide specifics. Gary is working with Jordan Taylor to finalize descriptions and details for the classes he will be conducting for CCA members. Gary expects that we will soon start advertising some of the classes and note when registration will open.

Susan has updated the CCA website information on local instruction opportunities. Many thanks for her work on this. The update includes a list of local paddling schools and professional instructors. In the website left-side navigation pane, click on "Instruction" and then "Instructors."

Racer timing – Lynn and Dean

Lynn and Dean have done a very thorough report on timing options. They are recommending that we invest about $120 on an app, with the old manual system as a backup. This will require at least two or three additional volunteer timers. If it works, the real advantage will be that organizing results at the end will be nearly instantaneous. Dean suggests that he and Lynn could report back sometime over the summer with a more detailed proposal of timing system options.

The Board authorized Lynn and Dean to purchase the timing WebApp for about $120 for one year.

Conservation Committee – Kathleen, Diane W

Kathleen reported that there was a cleanup scheduled at Riley's Lock on April 12, but it was canceled due to bad weather. They may organize another one over the summer.

Next meeting – Thursday, June 12. It will be online.
