Maps Old and New

At CCA, maps are in the news.

OLD MAPS  First, we've been given map collections from Steve Ettinger's and Roger Corbett's and Kay Fulcomer's holdings. Steve's maps are in the USGS 7.5 inch series, and cover all the areas of Maryland, Virginia, Eastern West Virginia, and Southern Pennsylvania that appear in his book Canoeing & Kayaking within Two Hours of Washington. Roger's and Kay's maps range farther afield, including hilly areas of the mid-Atlantic states from New York down to North Carolina, a swath of Rocky Mountain States (Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota), and some Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan maps and posters. We are considering how to put them to best use for the community and would welcome suggestions. We could dispose of them at the 2021 Xmas Swap Meet, or call attention to how to access such maps online.

NEW MAPS To the online collection of 40-odd pen and ink maps from his self-published 1975/86 booklets of maps of nearby streams, Ron Canter has recently added Goose Creek (VA), Lower Shenandoah (Staircase), and Kellys Ford on the Rappahannock. Goose and Kellys Ford are done by Google Map technology and include a text describing the watercourse and its history. Ron has now launched an expanded and updated set of maps for the lower Patapsco, where the removal of three major dams has revealed many new rapids. All these maps can be accessed in the CCA Document Library (from the CCA left navigation pane, Members Only > Documents > Document Folders > Maps). Many thanks, Ron!
