Rappahannock at Remington or GWC Canal
About this event
Greetings,
?
We may have an interesting option for the Sunday all-comers paddle. There was a storm down in Virginia and the Rappahannock is up. Unfortunately it is dropping fast. Fortunately, there is more rain forecast for the area. I would want moderate water to turn the trip south so the decision will not be made until we have day-of gauges. This should be a Goldilocks run--no rock-hopping and knuckle walking, no big water.
?
The Remington to Kelly's Ford section is rated class 2. It is a step up in difficulty from the Violettes Lock loop. Googling "Rappahannock River Remington American Whitewater" will get you a description. There is one major rapid mid-run, a twisting route through a boulder drop and a smaller rapid with the interesting name Piggly Wiggly (no idea why) that can be run or avoided at the end. You need to feel comfortable on the Violettes Lock loop to paddle this section.
?
Trip will meet at 10:30 to set shuttle. Bring lunch.
?
If the Remington gauge does not hold up, we will return to the GW Canal loop at Violettes Lock. Meet at 9:00 at the Violettes parking lot. Note: I hear that the Pennyfield Lock parking lot is largely unavailable due to ongoing Dulles Interceptor repair work so the shuttle option seems unwise.
?
NOTE, THE DECISION ON WHERE THE TRIP IS GOING WILL NOT BE MADE UNTIL FIRST THING SUNDAY MORNING. I WILL SEND A NOTE TO EVERYONE WHO HAS CONTACTED ME ABOUT GOING ON THE TRIP WITH DETAILS.
?
Standard safety preparations are required. PFD, flotation, helmet, & spray skirt please, depending on your boat. Please contact me via email at navajuela@comcast.net or by text at 301.404.0009. My phone does not take messages. I will send out details of the trip no later than 7:00 on Sunday morning.
?
