Labor Day Friends and Family Paddle

About this event

Hi everyone, I wanted to provide an update, along with some additional details for out on our Friends and Family paddling trip on Labor Day (Monday, 9/1/25).

Water Conditions
The water level on the Monocacy is relatively low right now (approximately 1.47ft with a flow of 260 cfs) as we would expect for this time of year. I’ve been watching the gauge it looks like the predicted water level will stay fairly constant for the next couple of days.

The American Whitewater site says that this is “Below Recommended”; however, we have run this river in the past at levels closer to 1.25 ft and made it down fine with a few bumps on the bottom. So, for this weekend there should be more than enough flow to get us down the river.

Weather
The temperature on Monday is expected to be in the low to mid 80s, with a 7% chance of rain. I don’t think we could ask for better.

Logistics
On Monday, I ask that everyone meet at Buckeystown Park (7221 Michaels Mill Rd, Adamstown, MD 21717) which is our put in for this run, at 10AM or earlier. Once you arrive, go to the northern most end of the park and unload your gear onto the grass.

Once you are unloaded, we will work out the shuttles. Our goal will be to have at least 6 to 7 cars at the takeout so when we are done with the trip, we have enough cars to shuttle people back to their cars at the put in.

The take-out is the boat ramp under the Park Mills Road bridge over the Monocacy. (GPS Coordinates 39.26142° N, 77.43704° W). We can help you find the location on your phone if the GPS coordinates do not work for some reason.

About the Run
This 6-mile stretch is normally rated at Class I/II, but at low water levels it’s a Class I river. This largely flat-water run is not challenging but does include several cobble bars and two small, but fun rapids. Both are just exciting enough to make you say “Weee!”.
