This week’s Sunday paddle will be on the Remington-Kelly’s Ford section of the Rappahannock. We were there back on 25 May. This is a 4.5-mile Class II-III trip. The first three miles are basically flat water. This is followed by a 1.5-mile rock garden that requires good boat control. There are two Class III rapids: Sandy Beach which requires a slight turn at the top, and Piggly Wiggly that is a narrow drop and can be avoided.

We will meet at the Put in at the Rector Tract (12233 River Rd. Remington VA 22734) [38.5288, -77.8122] at 10:00 am. River Road is at an angle from Andes Store (12209 James Madison St Remington). The level is projected to be 4.1’ or 725 cfs. CZ is 3.6’ or 250 cfs. The weather is predicted to be in the low 90s so bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. Bring a lunch as we will eat after running Sandy Beach rapid.

Canoes should have floatation. Kayaks need a skirt. Helmets and PFDs for all.

We are not going to the GW Canal because the Potomac is too high. By way of explanation, the Little Falls gauge is at Brookmont dam. This is a wide spot in the river, that requires a lot of water to move the gauge. For example at 3’ there are 3,000 cfs. At 4’ there are 10,000 cfs. The projected level for Sunday is 5’2 or 23,600 cfs. The ferry across would be tough for some folks at that level. We could put in at Riley’s which would necessitate a shuttle from Pennyfield. Secondly there would be a lot of water down the canal itself which could be problematic. Thus, the trip back to the Rapp.
