Thursday Paddle - Potomac Paw Paw Bends
Bob Maxey will lead a trip on the Potomac River from Paw Paw, WV to Bond’s Landing, MD. The trip is Class 1 and is 12.5 miles long. Meet at the C&O Canal parking area at 10:00 along MD Rt. 51, opposite Paw Paw, WV. Boats will be left here while the shuttle is run via bicycle. My brother-in-law will watch the boats while the shuttle is being run. We will drive to Bond’s Landing, MD via Malcom Rd., Old Town Rd., and Marten’s Ave. (There is an excellent map of this route on p. 32 of Ed Gertler’s “Maryland and Delaware Canoe Trails.”) Then we will bicycle 7 miles back to the boats via the famous C&O Canal Paw Paw Tunnel, over 3,000 feet long. Bikers should have a head lamp to guide their way through the tunnel. Locked bikes will be left at the parking area and we will then paddle 12.5 miles to Bond’s Landing.
We will be running the bicycle shuttle to minimize exposure to the COVID-19 virus. Some paddlers had their spouses run shuttle for them on a recent trip; that is OK here as well. As of Tuesday morning there is about a half a foot of water in the Potomac River, based on the Paw Paw gauge. The weather forecast calls for a high of 90 on Thursday, but there is a chance of thunderstorms. Bring rain gear and a lunch. Please contact Bob at 703-973-4787 or at boater3@gmail.com if you plan to join this trip.
