Seven paddlers (Alf C, Dave R, Gary & Ginny Q, Virginia, Vitas and Wayne McD) started the year off right with a paddle down the lower section of Antietam Creek (MD 34 to the Potomac). This was Alf's first time out since his broken wrist misadventure in July; it was good to see him back on the river. Virginia, too, was making her first reappearance on the water after her big auto wreck last year. We had a trouble-free high-water (1,410 cfs, 4.85') run on a mild day (cloudy with a high around 50). Many of the Class I rapids were washed out. Furnace Rapid was booming above the Harper's Ferry Rd bridge, submerged by Potomac backwash below the bridge (Point of Rocks gauge = 8.1').
