TH PAD - Shenandoah below Rte 50
Alford Cooley
19 Oct - 2017  - - Shenandoah River, Rt. 50 to Watermelon Park, 10 miles. AWWA gauge level, 1.07 feet.  Thursday paddlers ran this river on October 19, 2017. This is a beautiful section of river that I had not run since I was in college. There is not much white water, but the clear water and proximity to Washington should tempt other boaters. We saw 2 Bald Eagles, an Osprey and several herons. It was amazing to see numerous large fish, including once when I saw at least 25 large fish! Paddlers were Julie Fitzpatrick and Sheila Chapelle plus Randy and Jo Snapp in canoes. Kayakers were Kathleen Sengstock, Pete Chapelle, Sandra Ruprecht and me. Although the river was at a low level, there was a good current, numerous deep pools in the river and only a few scraping rocks.
