Trip Reports

Covington at 6-12"
Author Last Post
Frank Fico reports:

Jim Long and Pete Runge joined me on the Covington today (Sat, Jan 25).  The Battle Run gauge ranged from about 250-175 while we were paddling (estimated 12"-6" above paddling zero).  Not much sun but no rain either, high 40s/low 50s.

First time I've put in above US 211 -- no significant strainers in that section, or in the entire run for that matter.  I did cut out a branch hanging off a big trunk across the river just above one of the harder rapids to allow a better entrance.  The big strainer on a blind right turn that was there when I last ran it in 2018 has been trimmed to allow a clean run at least at this level (but not much higher).  VW Rock rapid has a log blocking the slot to the left, but the right channel is still clear.  Didn't have time for the "dessert" run on the Rush because of our noonish put-on above 211.

Ed. - That this run ocurred (at least with Jim attending) is due to A) Frank's scoping out the evening before that 1.5 inches of rain was headed for Sperryville area, and B) the Pick-Up trips feature of this website and Larry Lempert's sharp eye catching Frank's post and getting it out to the 125-person distro list.  I figure the lads may have had 130 cfs under them if they passed the usual SR 622 bridge put-in at 1 PM.
