THU PAD - Seneca Breaks - 2.0 ft - 27 Oct '22

by Tim Tilson

We had five paddlers for Seneca Breaks today. In fact we had one paddler come all the way from Wyoming to paddle this section of the Potomac. Well, not really, she was visiting Barb Brown and used one of her boats stored with Barb.

The paddlers were: OC1: myself and Hendrick. K1s: Barb, Kathleen and our mystery paddler - Carrie Chernow who divides her time between here and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

We set the shuttle at Pennyfield and then drove up to Violette’s. It was a lovely fall day albeit with a northern or westerly wind. Barb led the kayakers and your humble scribe to the far Virginia side before starting the descent. Hendrick turned into the first drop and was soon gone from sight. We worked out way down on the lookout for him. We reached the bottom left center of the river without seeing him. However, he then emerged from the behind the island coming from the Virginia side. Somehow we had both crossed to the opposite side of the river without seeing each other. From there it was a lovely, wind-at-your-back paddle down to Pennyfield. We ran into a rec kayaker at Pennyfield and another K1 paddler (Temmy Kimes) at Violette’s during the shuttle.

Lovely relaxing day on the river.
