GW Canal @ 3.25' - Oct 9, 2022
Author Last Post

18 (!) hardy paddlers met at the Violette’s Lock put-in the face of 50-degree weather and divided into three groups: Alf C, Dan R & John S ran Seneca Breaks, seven River Runners (Barb R, Hendrik vO, Jackie H, Sam M, Tim T, Toni B & Wayne McD) ran the George Washington Canal in an expedited manner, and eight Dawdlers Eddy Hoppers (Alan G, Barb B, Gary & Ginny Q, Gordy L, Lisa L, Rich C) proceeded down the GWC in a leisurely fashion. Level was 3.25’ on the Little Falls gauge. Although chilly, the sun was shining brightly in a brilliant cerulean (to use an SAT word) sky. The log at the top of Surfer’s Ledge has been washed away, presumably by last week’s heavy rain, but the debris pile below Jacuzzi Rapid continues to present a tricky passage to the unwary paddler. No carnage to report. Wildlife included an early sighting of two eagles by Jackie, multiple sightings of great blue heron, and a turtle count of 15 by Hendrik.
